For the second time this awards season, Brie Larson, most notably know for her role as a sexual assault victim in the movie “Room,” presented the award at the Oscars for Best Actor to Casey Affleck for his role in “Manchester by the Sea.”
Viewers of the awards show noted that Larson did not clap for Affleck when he won, reported by Buzzfeed.
Larson is a strong advocate for sexual assault, and at last year’s Oscars stood by the stage as Lady Gaga performed a tribute to sexual assault survivors, giving each woman a hug as she left the stage. Affleck, on the other hand, faced sexual harassment allegations from two women who worked with him in 2010.
Online, many have noted the strange coincidence that Larson has presented Affleck with the same award twice this season and the uncomfortable air between the two actors. However, it seems dramatic that it would be on purpose for Larson to be “set up” in this situation as some believe. On the other hand, there have been no arguments that Larson was being petty towards Affleck, just praise for standing true to what she believes.
More likely than not, it is an ironic coincidence.
